Where to Spend August 2026: Three Private-Villa Escapes Across Portugal, Italy & Spain

By The Parkside Homes Team · Douro Valley, Portugal · June 3rd 2026

August is the month the whole group is finally free at the same time — and the month a hotel feels most like a compromise. Three bedrooms down a corridor. A pool you share with strangers. A dinner that ends when the kitchen closes. A private villa changes the arithmetic entirely: one house, one table, one long week where the days belong to you. Here is how we would spend ours — three ways, across three countries.

1. The Douro Valley, Portugal — for the long, slow family week

The Douro does not rush, and in August neither should you. The river bends quietly below terraces worked for three centuries, and the heat softens into something golden by late afternoon — the light hits the valley around 7:30pm in August, which is exactly when you will want a glass of something local in your hand.

Casa da Raposeira near Armamar is built for the big gathering: space to spread out, a pool that faces the valley, and room for fourteen without anyone feeling on top of anyone else. A private chef cooks in the villa, a rabelo boat can take you onto the river, and a sommelier can walk you through the regional vintages without you ever leaving the property.

📍 Best for: multigenerational families and groups of friends who want one base and zero logistics.

2. Tuscany, Italy — for wine, the table and quiet evenings

Tuscany in August rewards those who stay put. Skip the day-trip churn and let the region come to you: long lunches under the pergola, a late swim, an evening drive to a hilltop town for gelato as the heat lifts. Lucca and its walls are close enough for a morning, far enough that you will be glad to return to your own gate.

A Parkside villa here is chosen for atmosphere rather than scale — somewhere to settle in, cook with what you bought at the morning market, and let the children run while the adults open another bottle. Private dining, wine tastings and tailored itineraries are arranged on demand, delivered quietly and never imposed.

🍷 Best for: couples travelling together, food-and-wine groups, anyone who measures a holiday by its dinners.

3. Andalucía, Spain — for the off-the-radar escape

If you want the version of summer without the crowds, look inland to the white villages of Andalucía. Villa Blanca in Gaucín sits in the hills above the Costa del Sol — close enough to reach the coast in under an hour, high enough to catch the breeze and, on a clear evening, a glimpse of the Mediterranean and the Rif mountains of Morocco beyond.

Gaucín is a town of cobbled lanes, working artists and long, unhurried tapas evenings. Days are for the pool and a book; nights are for walking down to the village square. It is the quietest of our three escapes — and for groups of friends who have done the busy beach holiday and want the opposite, that is precisely the point.

🌿 Best for: couples and small groups of friends after privacy, calm and a sense of place.
